Frederic Lawrence Holmes was born in1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University in the history of science. From 1977 until his death on March 27, 2003, he was a full professor in the Section of the History of Medicine in the Yale School of Medicine. Manfred Leslie Karnovsky, 1918-1999, PhD, 1946, University of Capetown, came to Harvard Medical School in 1948 as a Research Fellow in the Department of Biological Chemistry; he was named Harold T.
